Friday 18 May
On the way back from our run along the marina front
promenade, we returned via a bakery and picked up some croissants and pan au
chocolate for breakfast along with general bread supplies. We’re not going to
be in a port on Sunday, so this was to satisfy Steve’s special Sunday breakfast
need. They were delicious: the best fresh pastries yet, on this trip. We ate
breakfast on deck and enjoyed freshly squeezed orange juice, which is
super tasty.
During the morning Steve and Dave prepared the boat for
the incoming storm. It rained lightly for about an hour, by which time we had
the big ball fenders on, protecting the boat from the quay and the boat next
door. This was going to be a big balls up gale.
We had a large motor cruiser on each side of us. When the
gale did come through, from lunchtime, during one super strong gust, the boat
on our right veered towards us and it’s stern hit the quay. The boat on our
left was swinging a lot nearer to us and I asked the guy working on the boat if
he could put some fenders out, as there were none. He seemed very nonplussed
but as the gale progressed during the afternoon, we noticed that he had put
extra lines and fenders out.
Late afternoon we walked up to the old town, with gothic
cathedral, built in 1230 and the Almudaina palace, built by the Moors but
swiftly taken over by their Christian conquerors. We arrived at the cathedral
one minute after it had closed, so we have to make another sortie there when we
return to Palma in a weeks time. It is all very beautiful, so we sat, enjoying
lovely ice cream and the view of the magnificent palace.
The wind gradually reduced during the evening and all
became calm again. We ate supper on deck, enjoying more of the local fish.
