Saturday 7 September 2019

We took the day in port and went to explore the town and the castle.  This is perched on a high rock overlooking the town and the harbour and beach areas. We walked the winding streets up through the town to the castle and were rewarded with beautiful narrow medieval streets and spectacular views of the bays on both sides. The castle was relatively small inside, although the curtain walls outside made it seem bigger.  There is apparently a tradition of basket weaving locally, and there was an exhibition of basket work in the castle, including boats and fish traps, plus the more expected baskets and trays.
By the time we had walked up the considerable hill, and then round the castle, we were ready for food, so we ended up changing our plan and having lunch in a restaurant within the castle complex. We all chose variations of fish and pasta, which were delicious.

All too soon it was time to return to the boat for Chris to get his gear together to return home.  We had checked the transport links back to Alghero for him, and we could see that there was a bus service that would get him to the airport in good time. However, the folks in the marina had said that it was very difficult to get to the airport by public transport, so we had a few qualms about it, especially as it was going to be the last bus service on a Saturday night. I waited with Chris at the bus stop and we were sufficiently confident (not) to be discussing the possibility of getting a taxi to Sassari, and then a bus on from there. In the event, the bus appeared on time and the whole journey worked exactly as we had hoped.

Basket work is still being produced locally
