Tuesday 3 September 2019

After a brief swim, we prepared the dinghy and went ashore to the small village of Cala Olivia. There are just a hand full of buildings, including a restaurant, where we enjoyed some delicious Italian coffee. Asinara is the island of donkeys and we meet three, including a mother and baby as we walked up into the village from the quay. At the top of the hill is the old prison, from when the island was a prison island, before being made into a national park in 1997 and a marine reserve in 2003. Asinara has been a quarantine island, then a First World War POW camp, later a “super prison” for organised crime.

There are tours of the prison given freely but we gave that a miss and instead walked part of the coastal path to a very pretty beach. The different path back, giving us a circuit, was a little bit of a scramble through rocks close to the shore, but very beautiful.

Chris and Giorgia swam back to the boat, while Steve and I took the dinghy.

During breakfast we had lots of wasps around us, so we put some jam in a jam jar to encourage them away from the table. By the time we arrived back at the boat, quite a large amount of jam was gone. The wasps then became much worse while we were having lunch, resulting in us packing up quickly to move on to the next bay, only five miles away.

Late afternoon, we arrived in Cala Reale, with no wasps.

The day was rounded off with supper on deck, under the stars sky.

All in all a lovely day( apart from the wasps!).
